The Guard
The Guard is a Google Chrome browser extension that explores surveillance capitalism. The panopticon, “a disciplinary concept brought to life in the form of a central observation tower placed within a circle of prison cells,” was the catalyst for this project. Whether depicted through fiction such as Black Mirror, the modern-day panopticon is the computer, the phone, and other communication devices. We voluntarily offer our devices information about us, and we do not always know who receives and reviews this information. Similar to the guards watching the inmates, the computer monitors the users. The Guard exposes to the user what is normally evident to the computer. This browser extension consists of the watcher, an eye that follows your movements and reveals to you that which is hidden. Utilizing HTML, CSS, Javascript, and jQuery libraries, the watcher keeps an eye on the internet’s data mining practices and the user’s complacency and ignorance.
